Polyester: A Variety of Formulations for Specific Applications

Composites are composed of advanced fiber reinforcements with a high-end resin formulation. The resin matrix is responsible for holding the material together, so it is critical to utilize a quality resin formulation. Polyester resins with fiberglass components have been the fundamental foundation of the composites industry for decades. Manufacturers use polyester resins because there are many formulations that can meet application-specific requirements. Polyester resin applications include marine, industrial/corrosion, transportation, marble/solid surface, infrastructure, consumer recreation and construction. Below are the most common polyester resin formulations used in the manufacturing of advanced composites.

Orthophthalic Polyester Resin

Orthophthalic polyester resin (Ortho) was the original polyester formulation, and it is also referred to as a general purpose resin. Due to its low cost, this polyester formulation is still widely used in an array of composite materials. Orthophthalic polyester resin is most commonly used in applications where mechanical properties take precedence.

Isophthalic Polyester Resin

Isophthalic polyester resin (Iso) formulations were designed with improved properties. This formulation provides a much higher tolerance to chemical corrosion, heat, moisture, as well as stronger tensile properties. Because of this, manufacturers from the marine industry find that isophthalic polyester resin is a viable solution to create gel barrier coatings in marine applications. Also, isophthalic polyester resin is utilized in the manufacturing process of chemical storage tanks such as underground petroleum tanks.

Dicyclopentadiene Polyester Resin

Dicyclopentadiene polyester resin (DCPD) can be used as the primary base of a resin formulation, or DCPD can be blended with orthophthalic or isophthalic resin formulations to improve properties. This resin formulation has low shrinkage properties as well as improved cosmetic characteristics. DCPD resin formulations have become increasingly popular in open molding processes. One of the many benefits of this formulation is that DCPD has a better impact on the environment by reducing styrene levels up to 30 percent.
